How old will you live and what will kill you? This is a great graph that provides a basic narrative at first blush, but a more interesting story as you look harder. Perhaps the most noticeable is the primary causes of death: accidents; Alzheimer’s; drugs & alcohol; heart disease; first marriages.

Females clearly have a higher chance of survival through life. Although, around the age 15, there is a slight kink in the curve for males, who slowly start to close that gap.

This is a great approach to show several parts of a story—trend data, shaded areas with pertinent information, typesetting, and displaying median data for two groups.
